Online Book Study

I’m Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness Online Book Study Offered by Deacon Marsha Roscoe through Breathing in Christ

“The work of anti-racism is becoming a better human to other humans,” shares Austin Channing in the June 10, 2020 Unlocking Us podcast hosted by Brene Brown. “Have we built the capacity to care more about others than we care about our own egos? Will we choose to protect someone else over protecting our own ego?” she asks. In a time when nearly every institution (schools, churches, universities, businesses) claims to value diversity in its mission statement, Austin writes in breathtaking detail about her journey to self-worth and the pitfalls that kill our attempts at racial justice. Her stories bear witness to the complexity of America’s social fabric – from black Cleveland neighborhoods to private schools in the middle-class suburbs, from prison walls to the boardrooms at majority-white organizations. I’m Still Here is an illuminating look at how white, middle-class Evangelicalism has participated in an era of rising racial hostility, inviting the listener to confront apathy, recognize God’s ongoing work in the world, and discover how blackness – if we let it – can save us all.  Join the Breathing in Christ community for an online book study based on inspirational author and spiritual activist Austin Channing’s publication, I’m Still Here, who invites us to grow our capacity to be better humans.  Live weekly Zoom sessions will be held on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM EST beginning July 8, 2020. You can enter the conversation today by joining the I’m Still Here Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/612559609354241/.
