In Memoriam: Rev. Gary Owens

It is in sure and certain hope of the resurrection that we announce the death of Rev. Gary W. Owens. Owens, 80, of Lewisburg, Pa., entered into eternal rest on Friday, September 6, 2024.

Pastor Owens was the son of the late William H. Owens and Ethel E. Owens(Ross). He graduated from Susquehanna University in 1965 and the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary in 1969. He ministered in many congregations throughout his 55-year career and was beloved by his many congregations.

He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Allie and his daughter, Elaine DeMedio.

He is survived by his daughters: Lori A. Genchur(Mark), Lori A. Bollinger, and Angela S. Owens(Kevin); his grandchildren, Haley and Cole Genchur, Mason and Kaylee DeMedio, Brooke, Connor and Ethan Bollinger, Shaun Motter, Kylee Kreisher and Justin Cover; and his great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Kinsley Motter.

Owens is also survived by his longtime friend, Joyce Hummel, and his sister, Sandra Passmore (Urban), and numerous nieces and nephews.

He belonged to Sons of the American Revolution and thoroughly enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking and grilling, and was a coffee connoisseur. Nothing brought him greater joy than his four daughters and grandchildren and dinners with Joyce.

Service will be at the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg PA on Thursday, September 12, with Reverend Jacqueline Heitmann and Reverend Joni Johnson (both chaplains at WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital). Viewing is 10 to 11 a.m. with the service following 11 a.m and noon.

Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover PA. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society at donate.cancer.org
